Classic FM Radio Analysis
This site provides some insight into what is being broadcast on FM radio stations which play "classical" music. It consists of an analysis tool to look at what pieces and what composers are being broadcast over FM radio stations thoughout the United States.
The site is made up of two components:
- A batch parser -- Each day the server wakes up and accesses the prior day's playlist for 11 FM radio stations that broadcast classical music. The data retrieved is in HTML format and is stored in a small database. Each station has its own individual HTML format, but these files are parsed into a common flat file format containing the start time of a piece, the name of the composer of the work and the title. The stations currently in the data base are CL24 (Minnesota Public Radio), KING (Seattle, WA), KUSC (Los Angeles, CA), KVOD (Denver, CO), WBHM (Birmingham, AL), WGUC (Cincinnati, OH), and WQXR (New York, NY).
- Then there is a user interface which allows you to interrogate the broadcast database created by the batch parser. Users can search the database and show a variety of reports by date or by station.
- Here are some examples of analysis from the database:
- Show a comparative chart of the top composers on the catalogued stations
- Show a comparison of the stations top composers
- Show the top 50 classical music pieces broadcast on:
- Show a time distribution of piece broacast for the stations: CL24, KING, KUSC, KVOD, WBHM, WGUC, WQXR
- Show a report on frequence of broadcast for some major composer's symphonies for the stations KVOD, WQXR and KING
- Show which musical periods are broadcast most for station:
- Show the musical period broadcast for all the stations
